International Symposium on The History of Maritime Technology
Piri Reis University and Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology are pleased to announce the International Symposium on The History of Maritime Technologies (HIMAT-24), to be held in Istanbul, Türkiye.
The symposium is open to academics and researchers from Türkiye and abroad. Our aim is to open new horizons by studying the maritime innovative technologies background in the history, looking into the various areas related with the history of; maritime navigation, gun and powder technology, shipyards, ship building and marine engineering, submarine construction, radar systems technology, maritime accident analysis and technology developing due to maritime accidents etc. Thus enabling researchers, engineers and historians to ponder in deep and innovative maritime technologies in the future.
The symposium program will be strongly supported by the keynote and invited speakers who are well known maritime figures in their fields. Detailed information about our valuable speakers can be accessed from our website.
The proceedings of the symposium will be prepared as well, either digital or hard copy. However, selected high-quality original manuscripts with archival significance will be recommended for publication consideration in major international journals. On behalf of the Piri Reis University (PRU), it is our honor to host and co-organise this prestigious international event, the International Symposium on The History of Maritime Technology (HIMAT-24), by Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology. I would like to extend my warmest greetings to all the attendees of this excellent event.
As Piri Reis University, with the vision to become the leader in the development of our country’s maritime education and technologies and to be one of the most respected universities in the world, we aim to raise individuals who have 21st century competencies, who can manage the change and produce innovations, and contribute to the transformation of our society in the light of knowledge. In this sense, we will play an active role in the development of maritime technologies, in the research of maritime history and in bringing the trained manpower into the industry, which is the most important factor in transforming our maritime sector in accordance with the traditions of the age.

CHAIR’S WELCOME MESSAGE
It is our great honor to invite you to the International Symposium on The History of Maritime Technology (HIMAT-24), which will be co-organised by Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology and Piri Reis University, with cooperation of Research Salon for History of Maritime Technology in Japan and Maritime History Research Center of Piri Reis University in Türkiye.
We will focus on the following subjects as well, but not limited to the followings. History of; maritime navigation, gun and powder technology, shipyards, ship building and marine engineering, submarine construction, radar systems technology, maritime accident analysis and technology developing due to maritime accidents etc. The panel subjects will be revised after the receipt of abstracts.
The symposium program will be strongly supported by the keynote and invited speakers who are well known maritime figures in their fields. Detailed information about our valuable speakers can be accessed from our website. The symposium will be held in English. The twenty (20) minutes presentation time is allocated to presenters whereas thirty (30) minutes to keynote speakers.
Conference proceedings will be published after reviewing the manuscripts submitted. High quality papers will be considered, in extended form, for possible publication in specific reputable international journals. You can see the list of these international journals on our website when they are published.
We also plan to include a rich social program covering a welcoming reception, a gala dinner and social tour to the most spectacular attractions of Istanbul as well as technical tours to an industrial facility and university labs. You will have the opportunity to experience and observe the distinctive Turkish culture and hospitality and the beauty of Istanbul.
We endeavor to ensure that HIMAT-24 will be a valuable, impactful and enjoyable event.
